How to Set Up an HP Printer on Mac

1. Prepare Your Printer

 
 

Ensure the printer is powered on and connected to Wi‑Fi or USB.

  • Load paper and install ink/toner

  • Turn on the printer and check for error-free status

  • Connect to Wi‑Fi using Wireless Setup Wizard or press Wireless + WPS buttons

 

2. Update macOS

 
 

Keeping macOS updated ensures compatibility with AirPrint and HP drivers.

Go to Apple Menu → System Settings → Software Update

  • Install any pending updates

  • Restart your Mac after updates

 

3. Add Printer in Settings

 
 

Add the HP printer to your Mac’s printer list.

Go to System Settings → Printers & Scanners → Add Printer

  • Select your HP printer from the list

  • If not listed, choose Nearby Printers or IP Printer

  • Click Add to confirm

 

4. Install HP Drivers

 
 

If AirPrint doesn’t support your model, install drivers from 123.hp.com.

Visit 123.hp.com setup

  • Enter your printer model

  • Download the macOS driver package

  • Run installer and follow on-screen instructions

 

5. Test Print

 

Verify the setup by printing a test page.

  • Open any document

  • Click File → Print

  • Select your HP printer and print a test page
